1. 一心一意 (yì xīn yí yì) whole-heartedly This literally means “one heart, one idea.” It is used to express a state of doing something intently,and can also be translated as “to do something whole-heartedly”.
For example: 我会一心一意地爱你。 wǒ huì yī xīn yī yì dì ài nǐ. I will love you wholeheartedly.
2. 三心二意 (sān xīn’ èr yì) be of two minds This literally means “three hearts, two ideas”. It is used to indicate the state of wanting to do several things at the same time, but ending up with nothing done well usually, and can also be translated as “be of two minds” or “ half-heartedly.
For example: 上课要认真听讲,不能三心二意。 shàng kè yào rèn zhēn tīng jiǎng, bù néng sān xīn èr yì. Listen carefully in class, don’t be of two minds.
3. 四平八稳 (sì píng bā wěn) overcautious and unimaginary; lack of innovation This means everything is very steady and stable.
For example: 这种四平八稳,怕出差错的工作态度是不可取的。 zhè zhǒng sì píng bā wěn, pà chū chā cuò de gōng zuò tài dù shì bù kě qǔ de. This kind of overcautious work attitude is undesirable.
4. 五颜六色 (wǔ yán liù sè) colorful Something that is colorful has bright colors or a lot of different colours.
For example: 我家的花园里有五颜六色的花朵。 wǒ jiā de huā yuán li yǒu wǔ yán liù sè de huā duǒ. There are colorful flowers in my garden.
5. 七嘴八舌 (qī zuǐ bā shé) all talking at once this literally means “seven mouths, eight tongues”. It’s used to indicate that everyone is trying to say what they want to say in a discussion (a clash of opinions). Thus, it can plainly be translated as “all talk at the same time.”
For example: 由于火车晚点,大家七嘴八舌,议论纷纷。 yóu yú huǒ chē wǎn diǎn, dà jiā qī zuǐ bā shé, yì lùn fēn fēn. Everyone was kicking up a dust because the train was running late.
